Important Steps to Take When You Have a Leak

An undiscovered leak in a water or sewer line can cost you big money. Even a tiny hole in a water line can leak 10,000 gallons a month. If you think you might have a leak in your plumbing , then follow these steps:

  1.      Turn off any appliances that use water. These include showers, sinks, washing machines, spigots, and sprinklers. Make sure that they aren’t leaking water while in the off position.

  2.      Check the water meter . Normally there is a red or silver triangle on the meter that will spin if there is a leak. If there isn’t one then the actual meter dial should be spinning if there is a leak. If the leak indicator is spinning and all of the water using appliances have been shut off then you probably have a leak.

  3.      Find the main shutoff valve to the house and turn it off. The main shut off valve is usually located somewhere near the meter.

  4.      If, after turning off the main shutoff valve, the leak indicator is still moving then there is a leak between the meter and the customer-end shut off valve. If it isn’t moving then the leak should be coming from somewhere on the customer end including inside the house.

  5.      If you’ve determined that there is a leak, call a plumber to help locate exactly where the leak may be coming from. In some cases, the leak may be under the slab of the house and will require professional help to locate and repair. A quality plumbing company can find leaks under a slab and replace them before any foundation work is needed.
