What is now the Sacramento area was first inhabited by the Nisenan and
Plains Miwok tribes of Native Americans. A Spanish explorer named Gabriel
Moraga named the Sacramento Valley and River in 1809. Sacramento is the
Spanish word for sacrament, a testament to the area's natural beauty.
Sacramento was formally incorporated in 1850, and its population grew
considerably during the Gold Rush. Sacramento became the capital of California in 1854.
Today, more than 475,000 people live in Sacramento, making it the fifth-largest
city in California. Sacramento earned the title of "America's
Most Diverse City" in 2002 as the result of a study performed by
Harvard University. Sacramento is known for its elegant capitol building,
the UC Davis Medical Center, and the Big Four Building. The city is also
home to the Crocker Art Museum, which is the oldest public art museum
in the Western United States.
