Purchasing a House? Don't Forget to Schedule a Plumbing Inspection

There are a lot of factors to keep in mind when you’re buying a house, but one of the most important is plumbing. If you don’t have your new home’s plumbing checked out by a professional before you commit to purchasing it, you could end up with an expensive disaster. That’s why it’s so important to schedule a plumbing inspection before you sign on the dotted line. These are some of the tasks your plumbing inspector will perform:

Checking the Plumbing Pipes

The first thing you should find out is how old the pipes in your plumbing system are. Even homes with new-looking plumbing fixtures may turn out to have old, worn-out pipes, which means that you could end up with a plumbing emergency right after you buy your new house.

Checking the Shutoff Valves

If you have a plumbing crisis, it’s essential that you know how to shut off your water. This means that you need to locate all the shutoff valves in your home—and make sure that they’re functioning properly. Your plumbing inspector can check your valves and look for any symptoms of trouble.

Checking the Water Heater

No homeowner wants to have to deal with a chronically malfunctioning water heater. Whether the house has an electric water heater, a natural gas heater, or a tankless water heater, a plumbing inspector can check components such as the pilot light, look for leaky or rusting pipes, and inspect the water connections.

Checking the Fixtures

A water inspector will check and test all of the water-dispensing fixtures in your new home, including the kitchen sink tap, the bathroom sink tap, the bathtub tap and shower head, and all of the toilets. During these checks, your inspector will look for any warning signs, such as low water pressure or slow-draining sinks.
